All about the Australian Federation and the process:
The Australian Federation was a period of time when the divided colonies of Australia decided to come together as one country for many reasons. Some of these included the difficulty to travel between states and territories. You would be stopped on borders by immigration and searched, you would also have to get off the train and swap trains, this was because the colonies were not linked together and had different materials used for products and stuff like railway tracks. Before the federation Australia was divided into six separate colonies and was considered a part of England. Many people were trying to branch off from England and combine the colonies, one of these people was Henry Parks. Henry was 5 time premier of New South Whales and was pushing for something different. In 1889 he made a speech to the town of Tenterfield and it made an impact over the colonies of Australia. Leaders of the colonies decided to have a meeting over federation due to Henry Parks' speech. In 1891 after New Zealand, another English colony decided not to join the Australian Federation, head of colonies drew up a draft map for the commonwealth of Australia, although the idea never left the ground. Many people fought for the idea and the colonies were eventually convinced to try it again. This time people were allowed to vote for leaders to draw up a new commonwealth. In 1899 all of the colonies except Western Australia agreed to unite together, and a year later Western Australia was on board. As WA agreed to join after the constitution was written up and approved by the queen there is still a sentence stating 'WA can be a part of the commonwealth as long as the queen is happy with their state.' In 1901 Australia was deemed a federation and its first prime minister was Edmund Barton. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were not included in the constitution and the new government made it hard for people to immigrate to Australia.
